Top 10 Things I Loved about the 80’s:
10. Music that combined ska, reggae and pop. You can’t dance to that, you’re dead.
9. Long sweaters and leggings.
8. Peter Pan boots.
7. Big, colorful, plastic earrings.
6. Big, colorful, plastic hair.
5. Black eye liner that went directly onto the INSIDE of the bottom eye lid. OUCH!
4. As a teenage girl, I loved the fact we could dress up to impress ourselves and our friends. Caution: Rant ahead. Today , it seems as if girls are shown that as soon as they can, they have to dress sexy to impress the boys. All hail Cyndi Lauper. Even the uber-sexy Madonna had her own style. Girls, don’t forget to express your true inner selves. The boys will love you for who you are, not how well you imitate some old guy’s (i.e. manager’s) version of what a teenage girl should dress and sing and act like.
3. Owning, not being enslaved by technology.
2. Silliness as a fad was creative, not stupid.
1. Expressing one’s self was encouraged. Doesn’t it seem sometimes like society’s become more repressed in many ways? Happy 50th birthday, Madonna and thanks for pushing the boundaries and living life on your own terms.
Insightful Conclusion: The bigger the hair, the bigger the ideas of popular culture.
Today’s popular hairstyle? Long, flat and straight.
